WhatsNews Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 11, 2026
WhatsNews (“we”, “our”, “the app”) is a free daily news briefing app. This
policy explains what information we collect, why, and how you can control
it. WhatsNews does not run ads, does not sell your data, and does not
require an account to use the core app.
1. Information We Collect
Information you provide
- Account (optional). If you choose to sign in, we collect an email
address and password, or an identity token from Sign in with Apple /
Google if you use those. Passwords are never stored by us directly —
authentication is handled by our database provider, Supabase.
- Profile (optional). A display name and a profile photo, if you
choose to upload one.
- Preferences. The topics you follow, your preferred notification
time and time zone, your app language, and articles you save/bookmark.
Information collected automatically
- Device push token. If you enable notifications, your device
registers an anonymous push token with us so we can deliver your daily
briefing notification.
- Anonymous device identifier. A random identifier generated on
install, used only to keep app behavior consistent across sessions on
the same device. It is not linked to your name or email unless you
separately choose to sign in.
- Basic usage analytics. Events like “article opened,” “briefing
refreshed,” or “voice playback started” are recorded with a topic name
and timestamp, not your name or precise location.
- Crash and error reports. If the app crashes or hits an unexpected
error, technical details (device model, OS version, and a stack trace)
are sent to our crash-reporting provider, Sentry, to help us fix bugs.
We do not intentionally log passwords or message content in these
reports.
Information we do NOT collect
- We do not access your contacts, precise location, microphone, or
photo library, except the one photo you explicitly choose to select as
your profile picture.
- We do not collect payment or billing information. WhatsNews has no
in-app purchases or subscriptions.
- We do not use third-party advertising or ad-tracking SDKs.
2. How We Use Information
We use the information above only to:
- Deliver your daily briefing and push notification at your chosen time
- Remember your topic selections, saved articles, and app language across
sessions and devices (if signed in)
- Diagnose and fix crashes or bugs
- Understand, in aggregate, which features are used, so we can improve
the app
We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, and we do not
sell or rent your personal information to third parties.
3. Voice Playback
WhatsNews reads your daily briefing aloud using your device’s own
built-in text-to-speech engine. Briefing text is not sent to any
third-party voice service for this feature — playback happens entirely
on your device.
4. Third-Party Services
We rely on the following service providers to operate WhatsNews. Each
processes only the data necessary for its function, under its own privacy
policy:
| Provider | Purpose |
| Supabase | Database hosting, account authentication, and (if you upload one) profile photo storage |
| Expo (Expo Application Services) | Push notification delivery |
| Sentry | Crash and error diagnostics |
If you sign in with Apple or Google, those providers process your sign-in
according to their own privacy policies.
5. Data Retention
We retain account data for as long as your account exists. You can
delete your saved articles and preferences at any time from within the
app. To delete your account entirely, contact us using the information
below and we will remove your account data within a reasonable time.
6. Your Choices
- No account required. You can use WhatsNews’s core briefing,
reading, and voice features without ever creating an account.
- Notifications can be turned off at any time in Settings or within
the app’s Account screen.
- Saved articles and preferences stored only on your device (when
signed out) can be cleared by uninstalling the app.
7. Children’s Privacy
WhatsNews is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly
collect information from children under 13.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will update the “Last
updated” date above when we do. Continued use of the app after a change
means you accept the updated policy.
